Government advice on home moving during the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak

The housing market in England will remain open during this national lockdown. This means that people looking to move home will be able to both continue with planned moves and view new properties to move into in the future. Estate and lettings agents, removers, valuers and people in sales and lettings offices and show homes will be able to continue working.’

Below are the guidelines and steps in place that Assist Inventories take in order to manage the risk and protect its workers and others from coronavirus. These rules are provided by the Association of Independent Inventory Clerks (AIIC) who get regular advice on home moving from GOV.UK.

The following measures have been taken to control the risks:

  1. Where possible inspections should take place with minimum contact as possible. If the tenants do have to be met for access or key-handover, keys must be left in the kitchen and once access has been provided immediately vacate the premise.
  2. Tenants will NOT be able to accompany our clerk during the inspection under any circumstances.
  3. 2m social distancing to be always adhered to whilst in the property should the situation not be avoidable.
  4. Clerks visiting clients offices must maintain social distancing when inside of our clients premises and must wear a mask or face covering.
  5. Clerks are equipped with adequate PPE: gloves, mask, hand sanitiser, antibacterial wipes prior to entering a property.
  6. Clerks travelling to and from bookings must adhere to the government guidance in terms of social distancing and wearing a mask or face covering where applicable.
  7. Clerks must regularly sanitise their hands thoroughly before, during and after the inspection.
  8. Clerks must have the track and trace app installed on their phone

Note to Agents and Landlords

To ensure a unified approach and in the interests of minimising the risk of transmission, we have outlined some requirements that we kindly ask you to adhere to:


  1. Take steps to ensure any property is prepared ready for inspection which should include cleaning, ventilated, laundry washed, waste removed.


  1. For properties that have not been professionally cleaned must have been vacant for 72 hours.


  1. All contractors (builders, electricians, cleaners, removal men etc) must NOT be at the property during the inspection.


  1. Inform Assist if tenants are symptomatic or self-isolating. In this situation, the inspection will not take place and will be reorganised.


  1. Properties were someone has had symptoms the property must be professionally cleaned and empty for 72 hours.
